our africa anniversary

On August 19,1992 Phil and I and our five children boarded a flight in Newark, New Jersey.  Our kids were ages one to thirteen and we were going to the other side of the world for a whole year.

Let me give you a little history on how we began that one year adventure.  March 24- Phil arrives in Kenya to visit missionary friends   April 12- Phil arrives back in the USA, powerfully impacted by his journey   May 27- Phil and Jan interview with Africa Inland Mission  June 18-  the Morrisons are appointed as one year missionaries to Moffat College of Bible  August 21- we arrive in Kenya

How can I possibly describe our experience between April and August?  Just imagine seven people stepping into a canoe and immediately hitting grade 5 rapids which last for weeks. It was thrilling and terrifying and a little crazy.  I hoped I would survive the year.  And that our kids would be okay.

Somehow, over the next twenty years, we lived in Africa and our six kids reached adulthood as fine, upstanding world citizens.

On August 19, 2012, the twentieth anniversary of our first departure into the unknown, Phil and I will take our last child to begin his freshman year in college.

You did it, God.   I am still in awe.
